Overview
Lumwana Mining Company is seeking a Senior Environmental Officer – Operations to strengthen its Environmental team. Reporting to the Environmental Coordinator, this role is central to ensuring environmentally compliant operations, leading mine closure and rehabilitation programs, and embedding sustainable practices across the site. The successful candidate will champion Barrick’s values by driving accountability, integrity, and a results oriented approach while promoting a culture of safety and environmental stewardship.
Main Responsibilities
• Lead planning and execution of mine closure and rehabilitation programs in line with regulatory and company standards.
• Ensure operational compliance with environmental permits, licenses, and management plans.
• Oversee rehabilitation activities including landform reshaping, soil management, and revegetation.
• Monitor and report on environmental aspects such as waste, tailings, water management, and biodiversity protection.
• Integrate closure and rehabilitation requirements into daily operational planning.
• Manage contractors and consultants engaged in rehabilitation and monitoring activities.
• Liaise with regulators, communities, and internal stakeholders on environmental performance.
• Identify and mitigate environmental risks while promoting continuous improvement in operational practices.
• Champion site safety policies and enforce compliance with environmental standards across teams and contractors.
Required Qualifications and Skills
• Full Grade 12 School Certificate.
• Degree in Environmental Engineering, Mine Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in environmental management, with at least 3 years in an industrial setting and regulatory engagement.
• At least 3 years of supervisory experience.
• Strong technical knowledge of mine rehabilitation, biodiversity, hydrology, ecology, air quality, and environmental engineering principles.
• Experience with environmental data collection, management, and statistical analysis; familiarity with reclamation costing methodologies is an advantage.
• Working knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.
• High proficiency in computer applications including mapping software, spreadsheets, and presentation tools.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
• Valid Zambian driver’s license.
