Overview
The Principal Mechanical Engineer will serve as the discipline lead for KoBold Metals Zambia’s Mingomba mining project, providing strategic technical leadership and governance across all mechanical engineering activities. Acting as the mechanical authority for the Owner’s Team, this role ensures that designs and execution meet the highest standards of safety, reliability, operability, and cost effectiveness. The position requires a seasoned professional capable of guiding design development, overseeing consultants, and integrating mechanical systems across both surface and underground infrastructure.

Main Responsibilities
• Define and maintain mechanical engineering standards, specifications, and design criteria to ensure compliance with industry, corporate, and regulatory requirements.
• Provide technical assurance that all mechanical deliverables meet lifecycle, safety, and functional requirements.
• Lead mechanical input into risk, safety, and design review processes, including HAZOP, HAZID, and SIL.
• Oversee mechanical engineering scopes such as shafts, hoisting, dewatering, materials handling, ventilation, and workshops.
• Coordinate with civil, electrical, controls, and process disciplines to ensure seamless integration of systems.
• Review and approve key engineering documents, driving standardisation and alignment across project areas.
• Support procurement, construction, and commissioning phases, including technical evaluations and sign offs.
• Resolve design and site engineering issues, ensuring timely delivery of project milestones.
• Maintain discipline risk registers, oversee mitigation strategies, and drive continuous improvement through audits and lessons learned.
• Lead and mentor the mechanical engineering team, providing guidance and representing the discipline in project and partner meetings.
• Engage with operations to ensure maintainability and readiness of mechanical systems.

Required Qualifications and Skills
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Professional registration (Pr.Eng or equivalent).
• Minimum of 15 years’ experience in mining or heavy industrial mechanical engineering.
• At least 5 years in a principal or lead engineering role.
• Strong background in underground mine infrastructure projects.
• Proven experience working within EPCM or Owner’s Team environments.
• Deep understanding of engineering assurance, design governance, and compliance with Mine Health and Safety standards.
• Excellent leadership, mentoring, and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Strong analytical, problem solving, and organizational abilities with a commitment to safety and operational excellence.
